BCRS Business Loans Secures £20 Million Mandate to Support Small Businesses

BCRS Business Loans has secured a significant £20 million funding mandate from the British Business Bank to provide crucial financial support to small businesses across Wales and the West Midlands. This allocation is part of the British Business Bank's Community ENABLE Funding (CEF) programme, designed to widen access to finance for underserved smaller businesses that often struggle to secure funding from mainstream lenders.

Expanding Support for Underserved Regions

BCRS is now the sixth Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI) lender accredited under this programme, and notably, it is the first with a dedicated focus on supporting businesses in Wales. As a CDFI, BCRS specializes in providing debt finance and support to smaller businesses that face difficulties accessing traditional financing options.

The new facility will offer loans ranging from £25,001 to £250,000, targeting micro-enterprises and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in these regions. This initiative builds on BCRS's existing work, including managing the small loan element of the British Business Bank's £130 million Investment Fund for Wales.

Historical Context and Growth

Established in 2002 as the Black Country Reinvestment Society by the Co-operative Development Agency, BCRS began as a social enterprise lender primarily serving the Black Country sub-region of the West Midlands. Over the years, it has expanded its reach to include SMEs across the West Midlands and now extends its services throughout Wales.

With this latest accreditation, a total of £102 million has been allocated to CDFIs under the British Business Bank programme, highlighting the growing commitment to supporting community-based lending institutions.

Official Statements on the Partnership

Reinald de Monchy, chief banking officer at the British Business Bank, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. "We're very pleased to welcome BCRS Business Loans as the sixth lender to the Community ENABLE Funding programme," he said. "Its commitment to supporting small businesses across Wales and the West Midlands aligns perfectly with our remit to widen access to finance across the UK's nations and regions. Through collaboration, we can help more entrepreneurs invest, grow and create jobs in the communities they serve - businesses that are the backbone of their local economies."

Stephen Deakin, chief executive of BCRS Business Loans, added, "As a Community Development Finance Institution, BCRS Business Loans is pleased to build upon our longstanding partnership with the British Business Bank to join the lenders accredited under the Community ENABLE Funding programme. This accreditation strengthens our support for businesses in those areas, giving them vital access to the finance they need to generate growth and create employment, delivering impact in their local communities."

Impact and Future Prospects

In its most recent financial year, BCRS reported that 34.6% of its lending was invested in the UK's most disadvantaged areas, demonstrating a strong focus on economic development in underserved communities. The organisation looks forward to further supporting entrepreneurs across Wales as part of the British Business Bank's mission to improve access to finance.

This funding boost is expected to have a positive ripple effect, fostering business growth, job creation, and economic resilience in both Wales and the West Midlands, reinforcing the vital role small businesses play in regional economies.
