North East Business Scene Booms with Key Appointments and Promotions
This week has seen a flurry of strategic appointments and promotions across the North East, with several prominent companies announcing new arrivals that underscore the region's dynamic business environment. From creative agencies to law firms, these moves highlight ongoing growth and investment in local talent.
Creative and Digital Sector Strengthens Leadership
Different Narrative, a Newcastle-based creative marketing agency, has welcomed Julian Leighton as a non-executive director. Mr. Leighton, who co-founded the digital agency Orange Bus and stepped down after its acquisition by Capita in 2020, brings extensive experience to the role. He also holds non-executive positions at Hedgehog Labs and Land Digital. In his new capacity, he will serve as a thought partner, providing mentoring, advice, and business support to managing director Kieron Goldsborough and the senior leadership team.
Mr. Leighton commented on the appointment, stating, "Different Narrative is in a really good place and Kieron and the team have dealt really well with some very challenging market conditions over recent years. It's exciting working with a well-run business which is on the way up."
Meanwhile, Opencast, an independent digital technology consultancy, has appointed Jen Blundell to its executive team as chief capabilities and people officer. With a background in leadership roles at digital transformation firms like TPXimpact and FutureGov, Ms. Blundell brings years of experience in public service organisations. She expressed enthusiasm for Opencast's strong delivery track record and impact on large-scale public-sector projects.
Opencast chief executive Tom Lawson added, "I'm delighted to welcome Jen to Opencast. We always aim to attract the very best talent who share our values and that's what we have in Jen."
Investment and Legal Teams Expand
FW Capital has expanded its North East investment team with three new hires: Matt Elliott as senior investment executive, Max Woodhouse as investment executive, and Ruby Knowles as assistant investment executive. These appointments focus on delivering the North East Elevate Fund, which supports SMEs across Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, and County Durham. Joanne Whitfield, fund director at FW Capital, noted that their collective experience strengthens the team's position in the local market.
In the legal sector, EMG Solicitors has bolstered its family law team with two new appointments. Specialist family lawyer Jenny Goldstein, formerly of Samuel Phillips Law, joins as consultant solicitor, accompanied by Alex Buck, who continues as her personal assistant. Based in the Gosforth office, they will work with clients across the North East, the UK, and internationally.
Video Marketing and Manufacturing See Key Promotions
B7, a Newcastle video marketing agency founded in 2020 by entrepreneur David Broom, has appointed Phil Duggan and Gurdit Singh as directors and shareholders. Mr. Broom emphasized that this move recognizes their contributions and commits to future growth. Mr. Duggan remarked, "B7 has never felt like a job to me. We've built this business carefully, with belief and intent, and this next step formalises what we've already been doing."
In a historic move, Allan Brothers, a Berwick upon Tweed timber windows and doors manufacturer with a 200-year history, has appointed Linzi Jo Watson as its first female production manager. Starting as a customer service assistant 17 years ago, Ms. Watson has risen through roles including planning and logistics manager. She now oversees all factory operations, managing more than 50 operatives and ensuring strict health and safety standards.
Ms. Watson shared her excitement, saying, "My younger self would never have believed that I would end up in charge of the entire factory operations of an extremely busy timber window and door manufacturing business. I really love the hands-on nature of production."
These appointments and promotions reflect a broader trend of strategic growth and resilience in the North East business community, as companies navigate market challenges and position themselves for future success.
