MGL Group Sees Profits Soar to £27m as Turnover Tops £171m
MGL Group profits hit £27m on £171m turnover

County Durham construction and demolition specialist MGL Group has announced robust financial results, positioning itself for sustained long-term growth. The firm, established in 2008, saw its turnover rise to £171.3 million and its operating profit increase significantly to £27 million.

Strategic Investments Drive Performance

The company attributed its strong performance to high demand within the infrastructure and industrial sectors. Following rapid expansion in recent years, MGL now anticipates a period of more measured growth. This strategy is backed by substantial investments across its operations to enhance both capability and sustainability.

Key investments include the acquisition of new, advanced plant and equipment. The fleet now features GPS-enabled excavators, the group's first 36-tonne hybrid machine, a high-reach demolition excavator, and a range of low-emission vehicles.

Expansion and Sustainability Initiatives

MGL's growth is also geographic and operational. Its asphalt and quarrying business, Tynedale Roadstone, strengthened its position by acquiring Glenfin and Fulfordlees quarries in the Scottish Borders. This move significantly boosts its supply of essential materials like stone, sand, and gravel.

A major focus has been on recycling and sustainable practices. Following an infrastructure upgrade at its Newburn site, MGL Demolition launched a new soil washing facility. This innovative plant can process up to 160 tonnes per hour of construction waste, transforming it into recycled aggregates and washed sands.

Furthermore, planning consent was granted for a new asphalt plant at Allerton Waste Recovery Park near Knaresborough. This facility is designed to meet local demand and support regional highways contracts, complementing existing plants in Newcastle and North Yorkshire.

Award Wins and Workforce Recognition

The past year has been notable for industry recognition. The group and its subsidiaries secured multiple awards, highlighting excellence and innovation:

  • Responding to Climate Change Award at the County Durham Environment Awards.
  • Wins in the Climate Action and Innovation categories at the Constructing Excellence North East Awards.
  • A finalist place at the National Awards in London.

Subsidiary Rainton Construction enjoyed a record-breaking night at the CECA Awards, winning five categories. Additionally, Ryan Jefferson received the Trainee Civil Engineer of the Year award.

The company's workforce grew from 441 to 463 employees, with directors paying tribute to their talent and dedication. Joint chief executive Mark Davison stated: "We’re delighted to see the rewards of everyone’s efforts during this period reflected in such encouraging financial performance. These figures underline that our strategic approach to growth is paying dividends for the group."

He added that with over 500 employees, the firm remains committed to its core values and to creating a lasting, positive impact on the communities it serves across the North East of England.
