Tesco Fuel Discount: Spend £60, Save on Petrol Until August 16
Tesco Fuel Offer: £60 Spend Gets 8p Off Per Litre

Tesco has confirmed a new fuel-saving promotion, offering shoppers 8p off a litre of petrol or diesel when they spend £60 or more in-store. The discount, available at over 500 Tesco-branded petrol stations, provides a 5% saving on a full tank and is valid until August 23.

How the Promotion Works

Customers must make a single in-store purchase of £60 or more before August 16 to receive a coupon. The voucher can then be redeemed at any of Tesco's 500 branded forecourts until August 23. However, the offer is not available at Pay at Pump terminals, unmanned petrol stations, or Tesco Express stores selling Esso fuel.

Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad emphasised the company's commitment to value: “At Tesco, we are always looking at how we can deliver great value for our customers, and the extra ways we can help them make even more savings this summer. We hope this extra saving at the pumps will make life a little easier for families, just in time for the summer holidays and those all-important beach trips and getaways.”

Rising Fuel Prices and Economic Context

The promotion comes as fuel prices climb, with oil surpassing $100 a barrel for the first time in two months. According to RAC head of policy Simon Williams, the average price of unleaded petrol has risen nearly 6p per litre since July 6, reaching 156.19p, while diesel has increased by almost 9p per litre to 173.15p. These increases represent a 4% rise for petrol and 5% for diesel since the Iran war lows, though prices remain below the conflict's peak.

Williams warned that without an end to hostilities, fuel costs could rise further: “Unless the hostilities end soon, it's hard not to see the price of petrol reaching a new Iran war high.” He noted that a full tank for a family-sized petrol car now costs £86, while the diesel equivalent is £95.

Impact on Consumers and Summer Travel

The Tesco offer is designed to provide some relief for families planning summer getaways. By combining the in-store spend with the fuel discount, shoppers can effectively save on both groceries and driving costs. For example, a family spending £60 on groceries and filling a 50-litre tank could save around £4 on fuel, bringing the effective cost of their shopping down.

However, the £60 minimum spend means smaller households or those with tighter budgets may find it harder to qualify. The offer is limited to one coupon per transaction, and customers are encouraged to check their local Tesco forecourt eligibility.

As summer holidays begin, the promotion is expected to attract many drivers looking to cut costs. Tesco's initiative follows similar fuel-saving campaigns from other supermarkets, but the 8p per litre discount is notably competitive. With fuel prices expected to remain volatile, such promotions may become increasingly important for household budgets.
