Aldi Announces Major Expansion with Over 1,100 New Jobs in 2026

Aldi, Britain's cheapest supermarket, is set to create more than 1,100 new store roles across the United Kingdom this year as part of a significant expansion plan. The discount retailer is preparing to invest over £370 million to open approximately 40 new stores, reinforcing its presence in the competitive grocery market.

Investment in New Stores and Employment Opportunities

With more than 1,080 stores already in operation, Aldi is hiring for a wide range of positions to support its growth. The new roles will include both full-time and part-time positions, ranging from entry-level Store Assistants and Cleaners to senior Store Managers, with salaries reaching up to £69,000 for managerial roles.

This expansion is a key component of Aldi's strategy to increase its market share and bring its affordable products to more local communities across the UK.

Market-Leading Pay and Benefits for Employees

From April 1, 2026, Aldi will implement new pay rates that position it as the sector's pay leader. Store assistants will earn £13.50 per hour nationally and £14.88 within the M25, with these rates increasing to £14.47 and £15.20 respectively based on length of service.

This forms part of a £42 million investment in colleague pay for 2026, ensuring that Aldi's rates exceed those of all other supermarkets. Additionally, Aldi remains the only major retailer to offer paid breaks to all colleagues, a benefit worth approximately £1,500 per year to the average store employee.

Commitment to Career Development and Retail Growth

Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, emphasized the company's focus on encouraging more people to consider a career in retail. "We want to encourage more people across the UK to consider a career in retail, starting with high-quality training and development that gives people the skills and confidence to succeed," she stated.

"As we open more stores, we're creating more opportunities for people to start to build rewarding careers with Aldi. With market-leading pay, clear progression routes, and ongoing support, we're helping more people grow in retail while bringing Aldi's award-winning, affordable products to more local communities."

This initiative highlights Aldi's commitment to not only expanding its physical footprint but also investing in its workforce, providing competitive salaries and career advancement opportunities in the retail sector.
