The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a public warning for drivers and road users who are aged 70 or over. The agency took to X, formerly Twitter, to alert motorists about the requirement to renew their driving licence every three years once they reach the age of 70.
Renewal Requirement for Over-70s
The DVLA stated: "If you’re 70 or over, you need to renew your driving licence every 3 years. Do it online – you'll get your new licence within a week!" Drivers can renew their licence online for free if they are 70 or over, or will be 70 in the next 90 days. The licence should arrive within one week if the application is submitted online.
Photo Update and Eligibility
If drivers want to change their photo, or if the photo on their licence has already expired, they will need to upload a new one. The DVLA advises: "If you have a valid UK passport, we may be able to use your passport photo on your licence. If you're using a desktop or laptop, you may need to transfer your photos to this device to complete this service. Some users find this easier on a mobile device with a camera."
The online renewal service is available to those who are 70 or over, or will be 70 in the next 90 days, and whose British licence has expired or is due to expire within 90 days. Applicants must be residents of Great Britain (a different service applies in Northern Ireland), meet the minimum eyesight requirement, and not be prevented from driving for any reason.
Important Conditions and Exceptions
Once drivers reach 70, they must renew their licence every three years. They can change their licence photo at the same time as renewing. However, the online service cannot be used to renew a C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlement; these must be done by post.
Drivers can continue driving while their licence is being renewed if they meet all of the following conditions: they have the support of their doctor to continue driving, they had a valid licence, they only drive under the conditions of the previous licence, their application is less than a year old, their last licence was not revoked or refused for medical reasons, they are not currently disqualified, and they were not disqualified as a high risk offender on or after 1 June 2013.
