Six former Birmingham City players are searching for new clubs after being released by EFL sides, with one more placed on the transfer list. EFL retained lists are being published ahead of Saturday's deadline, and Alfie Chang – who left Blues for Walsall in January – is among those now without a club.
Alfie Chang's Journey
Chang, 23, was a first-team player at Birmingham City three years ago when a horrific knee injury in training sidelined him for 17 months. He rebuilt his career with League Two loans at Walsall and Bristol Rovers before making a permanent move to the Saddlers in January. However, he is one of 12 players released by Walsall, who failed to secure promotion despite topping League Two at Christmas for the second consecutive season.
Other Former Blues Players Released
Another ex-Blues midfielder, Charlie Lakin, has also been released by Walsall after two years at the club. Former Blues captain Michael Morrison, 38, has left Cambridge United after helping them earn promotion back to League One at the first attempt, having spent three seasons there. Oxford United have released one-time Blues loanee Przemysław Płacheta following their relegation from the Championship. Ex-Blues youngsters Geraldo Bajrami and Josh Andrews have been released by Burton Albion and Gillingham respectively.
Contract Discussions and Transfer List
Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Lyndon Dykes are in contract talks with Blackpool and Charlton respectively after ending their Blues careers in January. Meanwhile, Ryan Woods – who spent the 2021/22 season at St Andrew's – has been placed on the transfer list by League Two side Oldham Athletic.
