More than 150 guests gathered to celebrate local people who have overcome significant challenges to find work and gain new skills at the 10th anniversary of the Step2Skills Achievement Awards. The ceremony honored 25 winners and runners-up from across the county, with local dignitaries and community leaders in attendance to recognize the outstanding efforts of learners and employers.
Lee Elmer's Perseverance Pays Off
Local resident Lee Elmer received a runner-up award after securing a permanent job at a nearby supermarket. He set a goal to find work within walking distance of his home to manage his public transport anxiety. Upon receiving his award, Lee commented: "Despite a tough rough start, no matter what happens, you still get what you want as long as you persevere. In the end, it's not about the fall, it's how quickly you get up and how much further you can go." He added: "To me, the achievement is just the first step. I have much bigger goals. To everyone else, what you achieve now is also your first step; always continue striving for bigger goals."
Firefighter Elysia White Named STAR Achiever of the Year
Firefighter Elysia White was awarded the overall STAR Achiever of the Year Award after her training with the fire service. She rebuilt her confidence after taking time away from work and went on to excel in her practical assessments. As she proudly received her award, Elysia said: "Thank you so much for the award. It has been a tough journey, but with the support of my family and my second family, my watch at the fire station, I get to keep serving and protecting the community of Hertfordshire by doing a job I love every day."
Deputy Lieutenant Marion Brown MBE JP Shares Inspiring Words
Deputy Lieutenant Marion Brown MBE JP concluded the evening, remarking: "The stories that have been shared have been genuinely moving. Each one has involved potential being unlocked and realized, with long-term benefits of access to further learning and employment, as well as improved wellbeing due to barriers being broken down." She continued: "Your stories are real stories of transformation and of hope for the future. Whether or not you are a winner or runner-up, you move on from this a different person because of Step2Skills."
