Villa's Dobbin aims for top level after Preston loan

Aston Villa forward Lewis Dobbin has expressed his desire to avoid a 'backwards step' in his career as he prepares for discussions about his future following a successful loan spell at Preston North End. The 23-year-old, who joined Villa from Everton two years ago, has yet to make a competitive appearance for his parent club but has impressed during his time with the Championship side.

Dobbin has scored ten goals and provided eight assists in 40 appearances across all competitions for Paul Heckingbottom's team. He will look to add to those numbers in Saturday's match against Southampton before returning to Villa's Bodymoor Heath training ground to determine his next move.

Dobbin's Ambition for the Highest Level

Speaking to the Lancashire Post, Dobbin said: "I'll just take it as the weeks come and see what happens in the summer. One more game, give it my all and have a nice, deserved break. It's going to be an exciting last day and I'll take it all in. I owe the club a lot, so I'll try and enjoy it as much as possible."

He added: "When you go on loan and you have such a good connection with the fans and the club... they've definitely got a fan for life and we'll see what happens. I want to take a step forward rather than a sideways or backwards step. I want to try and play at the highest level possible; I think I can do that."

Regular Contact with Aston Villa

Dobbin revealed that he speaks with Aston Villa on a weekly basis and will meet with the club after the season ends. "I'll have to go in after the end of the season so we'll see what they say and hopefully, they'll be really happy with me. We'll see what happens. I mean, it depends. There's a lot of factors. You've got to listen to what other clubs are saying. You've got to listen to what Aston Villa want for you as well."

The forward emphasized the importance of making the right decision for his career: "I think whatever happens, I'll try and make it the most suitable move for me and the position I'm in, in my career at the minute. I've just got to make the most out of whatever situation I get thrown into."

Dobbin's performances this season have attracted attention, and his determination to avoid a 'backwards step' suggests he is aiming for a move that will further his development, whether that be at Aston Villa or elsewhere.
