Premium Bonds Warning: 14 Million Holders Have Never Won a Prize
A significant warning has been issued for Premium Bonds holders across the UK, highlighting that savings through NS&I Premium Bonds may not be the most effective financial strategy. Data reveals that a substantial 62% of holders, equating to approximately 14.3 million people out of 24 million total holders, have never received a prize since investing.
Expert Advice on Savings and Investment
James Norton, head of retirement and investments at Vanguard Europe, provided commentary on the situation. He stated, "Premium Bonds can play a useful role as part of a wider savings strategy, particularly for people who value security and accessibility." However, he emphasized a crucial point for long-term savers: "But when money is being set aside for the long-term, it’s important to consider whether it could be working harder through investment, particularly for those hoping to profit from the luck of the draw."
Mr. Norton elaborated on the benefits of long-term investing, highlighting the power of compound returns. He advised focusing on four key principles to build a successful investment portfolio:
- Set a clear financial goal, such as covering university costs.
- Select a balanced portfolio of investments tailored to meet that goal.
- Hold the investments for the long-term to maximize growth.
- Ensure the investment strategy is maintained at a low cost to optimize returns.
He noted that options include building a custom portfolio, choosing ready-made portfolios, or utilizing managed services for those who prefer expert guidance.
