Major UK Steakhouse Chain Shuts Oxford Circus Venue
The renowned Angus Steakhouse has officially closed its prominent Oxford Circus location in central London, marking a significant reduction in its national presence. A sign at the site now reads, “Sorry we are closed,” confirming the shutdown to customers and passersby.
From Peak Expansion to Drastic Downsizing
At its height in 2002, the steakhouse brand operated a total of 21 locations across various concepts. This included 16 Angus Steakhouse outlets, six Aberdeen Steakhouse restaurants, three Pizza Pasta sites, two Maxine’s Brasserie venues, and individual establishments like American Burger, American Cafe Bistro, and Highland Steakhouse.
Today, only three branches remain open: Leicester Square and Paddington in London, along with Bond Street. This represents a dramatic decline from its former widespread footprint, reflecting ongoing struggles within the casual dining sector.
Financial Struggles and Rent Negotiations
The restaurant chain encountered severe financial difficulties in 2021, primarily due to challenges in negotiating rent agreements with landlords. These economic pressures have contributed to the recent wave of closures, impacting its ability to maintain multiple sites across the UK.
Mixed Public Reactions on Social Media
On Reddit, customers have shared diverse opinions about the steakhouse. One local remarked, "I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve passed one, the one in Leicester Square probably thousands of times since having lived on Wardour street and frequenting Chinatown." They added, "I had just assumed it was the usual tourist trap. Though if there’s delicious food to be had I’m all ears!"
Another user noted, "Angus Steakhouse is definitely seen as a tourist trap by many locals, but honestly, the steak sandwich has gotten a lot of hype lately, especially after some influencers got involved." They continued, "While some think it's overrated, others swear it's one of the best in London! You might want to give it a try, but be prepared for the queues."
A third comment referenced marketing efforts by other steakhouses, stating, "TopJaw and that Todd fella are pushing a marketing campaign to get people to go to Hawksmoor." In a humorous response, another user laughed, "Please don't ruin this for the locals hun x," highlighting the blend of local ambivalence and tourist appeal surrounding the brand.
The closure of the Oxford Circus location underscores the shifting dynamics in the UK restaurant industry, where established chains must adapt to changing consumer preferences and economic realities to survive.
