Iconic Birmingham Indian Restaurant Asha's Expands with New Street Food Concept
Birmingham's celebrated Michelin Guide Indian restaurant, Asha's, which has attracted a host of celebrities over the years, is set to open a new street food kitchen in the city centre. The expansion marks a significant move for the iconic dining establishment, bringing its renowned flavours to a more casual setting.
New Location at Society Birmingham Food Hall
Asha's will launch its Indian street food concept within Society Birmingham, a vibrant street food hall located at One Colmore Square, near Snow Hill station. This five-vendor hall will welcome Asha's as a replacement for The Coffee Collective, which departed earlier this year after opening with the hall last September.
The new kitchen is scheduled to open on Monday, March 16, and will operate alongside the original Asha's restaurant on Newhall Street, ensuring fans can enjoy both formal dining and relaxed street food experiences.
Celebrity Favourite with a Rich History
Founded by Bollywood star Asha Bhosle in 2006, Asha's has become a go-to spot for celebrities visiting Birmingham. Notable patrons include Tom Cruise, who earned the nickname 'Two Tikkas Tom' for ordering double portions, as well as The Osbournes, Ed Sheeran, and Pink, who famously praised the restaurant to 40,000 people at Villa Park.
As one of only two Birmingham Indian restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide, Asha's has garnered widespread recognition beyond just culinary accolades, solidifying its status as a city institution.
Menu and Dining Experience
The Society Birmingham branch will offer a relaxed, street food-style casual dining experience, contrasting with the more formal sit-down meals at the original restaurant. Dishes on the menu will include chicken paratha rolls, chilli paneer rolls, Delhi samosa chaats, and vegetable aloo tikki chaat, showcasing authentic Indian flavours in a social setting.
This new concept aims to introduce Asha's cuisine to both loyal customers and new guests, emphasizing accessibility and informal enjoyment.
Community and Industry Reactions
Bobby Bassi, director at Asha's, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, stating, "At Asha's we've always loved to be at the forefront of the city's dining community. We can’t wait to pitch up at Society Birmingham and bring our brand new Indian street food concept to life. We're excited to share our love of Indian cuisine in a more informal, social setting."
Nick Gregory, founder of Society Birmingham, added, "Asha's is an iconic Birmingham brand, and we're incredibly proud to welcome them. Their reputation speaks for itself, and we know our guests will love seeing such a well-respected local restaurant join our community of independent traders. This new concept shares the relaxed and social feel that defines Society."
Surrounding Vendors and Location Details
At Society Birmingham, Asha's will join other local eateries, including Shokupan, which serves Japanese-style sandos and hotties, Amore Pizza Napoletana, smash burger vendor Slap and Pickle, and Asian-inspired kitchen Manzoku. This diverse lineup highlights the hall's commitment to offering top-quality and varied cuisine.
Society Birmingham is located at One Colmore Square, Birmingham, B4 6AA, providing a central and accessible spot for food enthusiasts to explore Asha's latest venture.
