Urgent Passport Solutions for Last-Minute Travel Emergencies
Discovering you need a new passport just before an international trip can be a major source of stress and anxiety. Fortunately, HM Passport Office offers two remarkably fast options that could save your holiday plans from being cancelled. These services are perfect if you are short on time and the standard passport application, which usually takes about three weeks, is not feasible for your schedule.
In some cases, the standard process may even extend beyond three weeks if additional documents, information, or an interview are required. To avoid such delays, consider these expedited services designed for urgent situations.
Option 1: The One-Day Premium Service
The premium service is exclusively available for adult passport renewals. Applicants must complete their application online and pay a fee of £222, or £235 for a 54-page frequent traveller passport. Once the application is submitted, an appointment is scheduled, often with the earliest slot available within two days.
According to official government guidance, you will need to hand in your old passport at your appointment. Your new passport will be ready for collection from the passport office just four hours after your appointment, making this an incredibly swift solution.
Option 2: The One-Week Fast-Track Service
The one-week fast-track service offers greater flexibility and is available for a variety of needs, including adult renewals, child passports, updating personal details such as name, place of birth, or gender, and replacing lost, stolen, or damaged passports.
Costs for this service are lower than the premium option: £178 for an adult passport (£191 for a frequent traveller passport) or £145 for a child passport (£158 for a frequent traveller passport). Appointments can typically be booked the day after applying, and the passport usually arrives at your doorstep approximately one week later.
It is important to note that neither the premium nor fast-track services are available if you are currently overseas or applying for your first adult passport. This information has been reported by sources such as Lauren Haughey from Wales Online.
The Government also advises that if you have already applied for a passport and have not received it yet, you should not pay for an urgent passport service. Doing so will not expedite your application and will result in a £32 admin fee for each additional application.
