In a significant rescue deal for the UK hospitality sector, the popular Middletons Steakhouse & Grill chain has been saved from collapse, securing the employment of its entire 159-strong workforce.
A Last-Minute Rescue for the Restaurant Chain
The future of the seven-strong restaurant group looked uncertain after the parent company, Gastro Pubs Limited, succumbed to severe financial pressures. On Friday, 18th November 2025, administrators Tim Bateson and James Clark from the firm Interpath were officially appointed to handle the company's affairs.
A statement from Interpath clarified that the steakhouse chain had faced immense strain from a combination of rising costs for raw materials and labour, coupled with a downturn in consumer confidence. These challenging trading conditions left the directors with no viable option to continue trading solvently, making the move into administration a necessary step.
Shareholders Step In to Secure Future
In a swift turn of events, the appointed joint administrators successfully concluded a sale of the business and its assets. The buyer was a new entity controlled by the company's existing shareholders, ensuring a continuity of ownership and operations.
This crucial transaction means that all seven Middletons locations will continue to trade as usual. The restaurants, situated in Chelmsford, Colchester, King’s Lynn, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Norwich, and Peterborough, remain open for business, preserving a vital part of the local dining scene in each area.
Jobs Saved Amidst Sector-Wide Challenges
The most immediate and positive outcome of this deal is the safeguarding of all 159 jobs across the chain. This news brings relief to employees and their families amidst a difficult period for the wider hospitality industry.
Commenting on the rescue, Tim Bateson, Director at Interpath and joint administrator, said: "Hospitality businesses up and down the country continue to battle hard in the face of strong trading headwinds. Whilst these challenges proved insurmountable for Gastro Pubs Limited, we are pleased to have concluded this transaction which will allow the Company’s seven Middletons Steakhouse & Grill restaurants to continue trading, preserving the jobs of their loyal staff."
This successful administration and buyout highlights the ongoing pressures within the UK's restaurant sector while also demonstrating a potential pathway to rescue for viable businesses with committed backers.
