Sutton Coldfield Mum's Luxury Holiday Turns Into Life-Threatening Ordeal
A British mother from Sutton Coldfield faced a near-fatal experience after a bizarre accident during what was meant to be a dream vacation in Barbados. Karen Griffiths, aged 66, contracted a deadly illness following a shocking incident where a granite worktop collapsed and crushed her foot.
Luxury Getaway Marred by Tragic Mishap
Karen Griffiths and her partner Michael, aged 67, embarked on a ten-day all-inclusive holiday at the Sandals Barbados resort in St Lawrence Gap. The couple spent £6,800 on this luxury getaway to celebrate Michael's 65th birthday with family and friends. They checked into the hotel on January 18, 2023, full of anticipation for a relaxing break.
However, on their first evening, tragedy struck. As Karen made her way back to bed after visiting the bathroom, she placed her weight on a granite worktop positioned at the foot of the bed. Without warning, the worktop gave way, crashing directly onto her right foot. This initial injury confined her to a wheelchair for the remaining nine days of the holiday, with her foot becoming increasingly swollen and painful.
Medical Crisis and Diagnosis
Upon returning to the UK, Karen's condition deteriorated rapidly. She was rushed to hospital after experiencing severe symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and a high fever. Medical professionals diagnosed her with Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia that can be fatal. Additionally, she suffered from kidney failure, requiring intensive care treatment for several days during her ten-day hospital stay.
Her partner Michael described the terrifying ordeal, fearing that Karen was dying during the worst moments of her illness. The psychological impact has been profound, with Karen reporting terrifying hallucinations and a persistent sense of trauma that continues to affect her daily life.
Life-Changing Consequences
The aftermath of this holiday disaster has been devastating for Karen on multiple levels. Physically, she now struggles with mobility issues, experiencing unsteadiness on her feet that has led to falls and further injuries. Mentally, she battles anxiety, depression, memory loss, and diminished confidence. The active lifestyle she once enjoyed—daily swimming, walking, and social outings with friends—has been severely curtailed, with activities now limited to short bursts due to fatigue and breathlessness.
Financially, the impact has been equally severe. Karen was forced to close down her established cleaning business, which she operated with her cousin, resulting in significant financial strain. The business dissolution represents not just an economic loss but the end of a cherished professional endeavor.
Legal Proceedings and Admission of Liability
Karen instructed serious injury solicitors Irwin Mitchell to investigate her case against tour operator Kenwood Travel. The company has admitted liability for both the foot injury caused by the collapsing granite worktop and for her contraction of Legionnaires' disease during the holiday.
Her solicitor, Jatinder Paul, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating: "Karen has been through a terrible ordeal following her holiday. Whilst we welcome the tour operator's admission, she continues to be profoundly impacted. Legionnaires' disease is extremely serious and can lead to long-term health complications and, in some cases, can be fatal."
Paul further highlighted the importance of safety measures in public accommodations: "Public buildings such as hotels often have complex water systems, so strict precautions are essential to prevent the bacteria from developing. Tour operators have a legal duty to ensure the safety of those who have booked all-inclusive holidays with them."
Ongoing Recovery and Legal Resolution
Karen's legal team is currently working with Kenwood Travel to secure a financial settlement that will support her ongoing recovery needs. She expressed her emotional distress, saying: "The incident in Barbados has changed my way of life. I can't get the holiday out of my mind and it still upsets me whenever I think about what happened and the lasting effect it's had."
Despite the challenges, Karen remains determined to rebuild her life, supported by her family. However, the path forward is fraught with difficulties as she navigates the physical, mental, and financial repercussions of this traumatic experience.
Unique Vacations UK Ltd., an affiliate representing Sandals Resorts, declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings, citing company policy. Kenwood Travel Ltd has been contacted for further response regarding this case.
