Families across the West Midlands are in for a treat this festive season, as a host of enchanting Christmas steam train experiences have been announced for 2025. From magical journeys to the North Pole to interactive theatrical adventures, these seasonal rail trips promise to create unforgettable memories for children and adults alike.
Magical North Pole Journeys & Santa Encounters
Several beloved rail attractions are bringing the magic of Christmas films to life. Vintage Trains will once again operate The Polar Express from Birmingham's Moor Street Station. Inspired by the classic film, the experience includes characters, hot chocolate, cookies, and a train ride to meet Santa. It runs from November 22 to December 23, with four departures daily, increasing to five on December 20 and 21.
Further afield, Telford Steam Railway and Churnet Valley Railway in Staffordshire are also hosting their own Polar Express events. The Telford version, running from November 21 to December 23, encourages festive pyjamas and features the Conductor and chefs. At Froghall Station on the Churnet Valley line, passengers can enjoy the same treats before receiving a special silver bell from Father Christmas. This event starts even earlier, on November 8.
New Interactive Adventures for 2025
This year sees the launch of exciting new events. The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) introduces The Great Christmas Train Rescue. Families board a steam train at Kidderminster Station to travel to Arley Station for a brand-new Christmas show. Every child gets a present and a sweet treat. It operates on weekends from November 29 to Christmas Eve, with Relaxed Santa Steam Specials also available.
Also new on the SVR is The Elf Express, departing from Bridgnorth Station. This experience offers private compartments, on-board performances, and an interactive theatrical adventure suitable for all ages. It runs on selected dates from November 29 to Christmas Eve.
Illuminated Experiences & Festive Day Outs
For a full day of Christmas magic, The Magical Santa Express at Statfold Country Park in Tamworth features an illuminated train ride with falling snow and twinkling lights to Santa's grotto. The park also boasts a play barn, reindeer stables, Mrs Claus' bakery, and a North Pole Post Office. It operates on selected dates from November 28 to December 23.
While not a steam engine, the Twinkle Express at Drayton Manor's new 'Efltoria' event offers festive fun on rails from November 22 to December 24, complemented by a Cinderella pantomime and a Santa's grotto.
With such a diverse array of festive steam train rides and Christmas rail experiences now booking around Birmingham, families are urged to secure their tickets early for these popular seasonal highlights.
