The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated guidance for UK tourists planning trips to Turkey, advising against travel to certain areas of the popular holiday destination. This warning comes amid heightened security risks that could impact travellers' safety and insurance coverage.
Security Concerns and Travel Restrictions
The FCDO states that travel to regions within 10 kilometres of the Syrian border is strictly off-limits due to ongoing fighting and an increased threat of terrorism. The office emphasised that travelling against this advice could invalidate travel insurance policies, leaving tourists without financial protection in case of emergencies.
While 24-hour consular assistance remains available by phone or online, the FCDO noted that in-person consular support is severely limited in areas where travel is advised against. This limitation could pose significant challenges for British nationals requiring urgent help in these restricted zones.

The travel warning follows recent security developments in the region. Turkish officials reported that a ballistic missile launched from Iran toward Turkish airspace was intercepted and destroyed by NATO air defence systems in the eastern Mediterranean. Fragments from the interceptor were found in the Dortyol district of southern Turkey, near the Syrian border.
In response to these events, international allies have expressed support for Turkey. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed American backing during discussions with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, stating that attacks on Turkey's sovereign territory were unacceptable. NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart emphasised the alliance's solidarity with Turkey, highlighting their strong defence posture across all domains.
