Filtronic Secures £7m Defence Contract with Major European Customer
Filtronic wins £7m European defence contract

Radio frequency specialist Filtronic has landed a significant new contract worth £7 million with a major European defence contractor. The County Durham firm, which was recently crowned the North East's Business of the Year, made the announcement to the London Stock Exchange.

Details of the Defence Sector Deal

The company has received an 'Authorisation to Proceed' for the supply of advanced components, marking the next phase of a long-running electronic sensor programme. This initial step allows work to begin immediately, with a formal purchase order expected to be converted in the opening months of 2026.

Filtronic revealed that the total value of the two-year programme is anticipated to reach £11 million. Production for this mission-critical project will be centred at the company's state-of-the-art microelectronics facility within NETPark in Sedgefield.

A Transformational Period for the Firm

This latest win continues an exceptional 18-month period for the business. It follows a landmark partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX, which has generated multiple multi-million-pound orders and led to SpaceX taking a financial stake in the Durham company.

In October, Filtronic published accounts showing a dramatic financial upswing. Turnover more than doubled to £56.3 million for the year ending May 2025, while operating profit soared to £13.4 million from £3.6 million the previous year. Chief Executive Nat Edington described it as a 'transformational period' for the group.

Investing in Capacity and Capability

Filtronic is currently expanding its footprint at NETPark, moving to a new headquarters. The enhanced facilities are designed to increase manufacturing capacity and include new cleanroom areas, engineering labs, and testing facilities. The company ended its last financial year with 165 employees.

Commenting on the new contract, CEO Nat Edington said: "This latest win deepens our engagement with a key European defence customer and strengthens Filtronic’s position in the defence sector, a growing market for the Group. As we invest in capability and capacity, Filtronic is increasingly well positioned to support long-term demand for advanced RF solutions in the defence market."

The order underscores long-term customer confidence in Filtronic's high-performance technology and solidifies its status as one of the most successful firms based on the NETPark science and business park.
