The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has disclosed the 10 everyday supermarket staples that have seen the steepest price increases, with one item doubling in cost to £13. The data highlights the growing financial pressure on UK households as inflation continues to affect essential goods.

Baby Nappies Lead the Price Surge

The worst offender is baby nappies, which have risen by 110 percent over the past three months, from £6.00 to £13.00. This is followed by milk chocolate bars (4-pack), up 93 percent from £2.50 to £3.75. Frozen oven chips (1kg) have increased by 87 percent, now costing £3.75 compared to £2.00. Spreadable butter (400g) is up 85 percent, from £3.00 to £5.55, while chocolate digestive biscuits have risen 73 percent, from £1.50 to £2.60.

Other Notable Increases

Wheat biscuits (36-pack) have gone up by 64 percent, now priced at £4.10, and tikka masala curry sauce has increased by 62 percent to £2.85. Shower gel (400ml) is up 58 percent, costing £4.75. Instant noodles (90g) and dried penne pasta (500g) have both risen by 50 percent, now at £1.50 each.

Charlie Evans, money expert at Compare the Market, commented: “These aren’t luxury purchases, they’re the snacks, staples and essentials that define the weekly shop for millions of people. While there is no way to completely offset inflation, our data shows that the steepest price rises are currently concentrated in certain treats and essential goods.”
