23% of UK Drivers Plan to Ditch Cars Within 5 Years

A staggering 23 per cent of UK drivers are planning to give up their cars within the next five years, according to a new study, as the cost of motoring becomes increasingly unsustainable. The Turo Annual Car Ownership Index 2026 found that fuel costs were the most commonly cited issue, identified by one-third of motorists as a key factor in their decision.

Rising Costs Driving Change

Rory Brimmer, managing director UK at car sharing marketplace Turo, commented: "Britons love their cars, but the love of ownership is fading. What stands out in this year's Index is how many people are now seriously planning life without a car, not because they want to, but because the economics of ownership have become untenable for a growing number of households."

The conflict in the Middle East has led to a significant increase in road fuel prices, prompting the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to step up its statutory monitoring of petrol and diesel prices. In March 2026, retailers responsible for thousands of fuel stations across the UK were notified that formal requirements to supply revenue, costs, and sales data would be brought forward, enabling the CMA to accelerate its review of fuel margins – the difference between the price petrol stations pay for fuel and the price they sell it at – since the conflict began.

Fuel Price Trends

Since peaking on 15 April 2026 at 191.54p per litre, the average price of diesel has fallen by nearly 8p (7.79p) to 183.75p. Despite this slight decline, costs remain high, putting pressure on household budgets.

Brimmer added: "A car that isn't properly maintained isn't just an inconvenience, it's a hazard, with warranties at risk and MOT failures becoming more likely." The findings highlight a growing trend that could reshape transportation habits in the UK over the coming years.
