Octopus Energy has confirmed that 350 pubs across Britain will receive free electricity during all remaining World Cup matches, including the third-placed play-off. The initiative, called 'Watt a Save', has already helped hundreds of independent pubs cut their energy bills by almost £20,000 each since the tournament began.
England's World Cup Run Sparks Energy Relief
England have reached the World Cup semi-final for only the fourth time in history, facing Argentina tonight. The Three Lions' success has driven massive demand in pubs, with six million pints expected to be sold on Wednesday night alone. To support hospitality venues during this busy period, Octopus Energy is extending its free electricity offer through to the final whistle of the last game.
Since the tournament started, over 350 pubs have signed up for the scheme, collectively using over 77,500 kWh of electricity during match sessions. The free electricity covers five hours per game, including the 3rd place playoff on Saturday night.
Pub Owners Welcome the Savings
Zoisa North-Bond, CEO at Octopus Energy for Business, said: “England’s incredible World Cup run has given fans plenty to celebrate, and we want pubs to make the most of every minute. It’s brilliant to see the savings our pub customers have been making on their bills through ‘Watt a Save’ and we’re now extending this right through to the final whistle of the last game in the tournament.”
Declan Perkins, owner of Clissold Park Tavern, The Lauriston and The Regent pubs in London, added: “The World Cup is one of our busiest times and it means hiring extra staff and increased drinks deliveries to meet this huge demand as fans are turning out in massive numbers. As we focus on giving our customers a brilliant match day experience, free electricity is a real help - and we’ve already saved hundreds of pounds through ‘Watt a Save’.”
Impact on Energy Bills and Customer Experience
The 'Watt a Save' scheme has proven vital for pubs, which often face soaring energy costs during major sporting events. By providing free electricity, Octopus Energy helps reduce operational expenses, allowing pub owners to invest more in staffing, stock, and customer experience. With England's continued success, the extended offer ensures pubs can keep the celebrations going without worrying about their electricity bills.
