The RAC has identified the 40 most expensive petrol stations in the UK, with half of them operated by Welcome Break. Despite a recent decline in average fuel prices, these forecourts are charging up to 43p more per litre than the national average.
Current fuel price trends
The average cost of a litre of petrol has fallen from a peak of 159.53p on May 28 to 154.45p this week, according to the RAC. Diesel now costs an average of 173.76p per litre. The RAC suggests that petrol could fall below 150p and diesel under 170p in the coming weeks.
Scott Benson of Fuel Finder commented: “Pump prices are finally moving in the right direction, with diesel seeing the sharpest correction after an extreme spring spike. But this is relief, not cheap fuel: petrol and diesel remain dramatically higher than a year ago, so drivers are still paying a heavy premium even as wholesale pressure starts to unwind.”
Most expensive stations
The priciest station is Welcome Break South Mimms Truckstop (EN6 3NE) at 197.9p per litre, tied with Welcome Break Rothwell (NN14 6AA) and Welcome Break Rotherham Truckstop (S60 4EQ). Asda Express stations also feature prominently, with Asda Bothwell Express (G71 8BG) at 191.9p and several others above 190p.
An Asda spokesperson said: “Asda’s supermarket sites are the cheapest place for motorists to fill up in the UK, and our 321 supermarket forecourts set the benchmark for our value position on fuel. Our Asda Express convenience sites operate in different locations and have higher operating costs. These sites continue to offer good value compared with the wider convenience market.”
