A 48-year-old nursery worker has voiced strong criticism after discovering what she describes as "gendered pens" during a visit to an Aldi branch in Lincolnshire in early March. Emma Ward, who has worked with children for three decades, expressed her dismay at the product packaging, which labels pens specifically for boys and girls despite the pens themselves appearing identical.

Nursery Worker's Concerns About Stereotypes

Ms. Ward, who visited the Grantham store, explained that the pen packs feature matching packaging with the only distinction being gender-specific labelling. "Genderising something as simple as pens just hit a nerve - it goes against everything that I've told the children," she said. She emphasized her commitment to teaching children they can pursue any interests regardless of gender, stating, "We spend our lives telling the children that they can do whatever they want to do and play with whatever they want to. Little boys can be princesses if they want to."

She further argued that such products can be damaging by reinforcing differences between boys and girls. "I think it really can be damaging, obviously when children see them they'll think boys and girls are different. They [will think they] produce things for different people, so obviously boys and girls should do separate things," Ms. Ward added. This experience has altered her perception of Aldi, leading her to feel "put off" from shopping there in the future.
