Aston Villa have entered discussions with Brazilian side Flamengo over a potential transfer for former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Emerson Royal. The 27-year-old, who joined Flamengo in July 2025, has emerged as a target for Villa manager Unai Emery as he seeks to bolster competition for Matty Cash at right-back.
Transfer Talks Underway
Talks have taken place between Villa and Flamengo, although a deal is not yet at an advanced stage. Emerson made 101 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur between 2021 and 2024 but struggled to consistently meet expectations during his time in north London. He joined Spurs from Barcelona after an impressive spell with Real Betis, where he established himself as one of Europe's most promising right-backs.
In the summer of 2024, when AC Milan were interested in signing Cash, the Italian club instead moved to secure Emerson. However, his 2024/25 season was disrupted by injury, causing him to miss the second half of the campaign. He started 17 Serie A matches in the first half of the season while fit.
Return to Brazil
Emerson later returned to Brazil, joining Flamengo on a permanent deal. He made eight league appearances after arriving midway through the season and finished the campaign by helping Flamengo win the Brazilian title.
According to reports, Villa view Emerson as a valuable addition to provide depth and competition for Cash, who has been a regular starter under Emery. The potential move would mark Emerson's return to the Premier League after a stint in Italy and Brazil.
Impact on Villa's Squad
Emerson's arrival would give Emery more tactical flexibility, particularly with European commitments expected next season. The Brazilian's experience in England and Italy could prove beneficial for Villa's defensive options. However, the deal remains in early stages, with no agreement yet reached between the clubs.
