Caneat, a popular cafe on Pershore Road in Stirchley, Birmingham, has permanently closed its doors after serving the community since June 2017. The closure has prompted an outpouring of grief from loyal customers, including comedian Joe Lycett, who described the news as 'awful, awful news.'
A Beloved Community Hub
Known for its excellent breakfasts and brunches, Caneat was a magnet for families, local residents, and even Michelin-starred chefs who praised its ever-changing menu. The cafe featured a sun-trap back garden, good coffee, and a selection of children's toys, making it a favorite spot for parents. On weekends, queues often formed outside as customers waited to enjoy its famous seven-minute eggs.
In a statement, owners Dominic and Victoria Clarke explained the difficult decision. 'We can't believe we are writing this, but we are having to close our doors. Since June 2017 we have tried our best to be the most creative, welcoming and family friendly space that we could be.'
The 'Horrific' Reality of Hospitality
The couple described the current state of the hospitality industry as 'a horrific way to try and make a living.' They added, 'As young parents who adored good food, we wanted to open a space that cooked from scratch, offered good value and was an environment that families could allow their little ones to make a mess, scream and shout, without the judgement of others. Our aim was to be a cross between a cafe in Berlin and a National Trust tearoom. For a short time, we thought we were exactly that.'
Over the years, Caneat evolved to host various pop-up businesses, including plant shops, homeware shops, a deli, and a Covid delivery service. It also hosted wine nights, Burns Night celebrations, and weddings. However, the owners admitted to making mistakes along the way. 'As Stirchley has changed we have also tried to adapt but I think unfortunately we have made a few mistakes upon the way. We didn't know how to run a business, we just knew how to run Caneat.'
Community Reaction
The closure announcement sparked an emotional response from the community. Lydia Gardiner wrote: 'This is truly heartbreaking to hear, such an integral part of Stirchley. Sending so much love to you guys.' Kate Ward added: 'This is devastating. I'm so sorry to hear this. Thank you for always welcoming us and all our babies in our maternity leave era, and for having so many high chairs!' Susie Brown said: 'It's been 9 years of coming to 100% my favourite place in Stirchley and I'm so so gutted for you and for all of us.'
Caneat served its final meals on Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27, 2026. The owners expressed gratitude, saying, 'We always thought of Caneat as an extension of our lounge and it has been the most incredible honour to watch families grow up and make life long friends. We will miss serving our community more than you can ever imagine.'
