Birmingham City Centre Shop Replaces Staff with Vending Machines After Being Targeted
The Londis shop located within Birmingham's International Convention Centre (ICC) has officially reopened after being shut for months, but with a drastic transformation: vending machines have replaced traditional tills and staff members.
This change comes in response to the store being repeatedly targeted by thieves, which led to its prolonged closure last year. Instead of the familiar setup with employees manning counters and rows of products, customers now encounter tall machines dispensing drinks and snacks.
Drastic Changes Following Theft Incidents
Tony Clark, JCO retail finance director, previously revealed plans to trial this new approach in October, citing ongoing theft issues. He explained that the vending machines are card-only and stock the same products as the former shop, aiming to operate without the thieving problems.
According to a customer notice inside the shop, the site now operates 24 hours a day. The notice also assures customers: "Products that do not vend will NOT charge your card."
How the New System Works
The vending machines allow customers to pay directly through the system, eliminating the need for cash transactions or staff assistance. This move is seen as a innovative solution to combat theft while maintaining service in a high-traffic city centre location.
Many Brummies will remember the previous shop layout, but the new vending-only model represents a significant shift in how retail operates in challenging urban environments.
