Lidl Breaks Ground on New Walsall Store, Creating 40 Jobs
Construction Starts on New Lidl in Walsall

Work has officially commenced on a brand-new Lidl supermarket in Walsall, a development set to bring dozens of new employment opportunities to the Darlaston area. The project will see the long-vacant former Buzz Bingo hall on Park Lane transformed into a modern food store.

From Bingo Hall to Supermarket

The former Buzz Bingo venue closed its doors in 2020 and has stood empty ever since. Lidl first submitted plans for the site back in 2022, but the application was later withdrawn. A second proposal followed in 2023, which initially faced hurdles.

Planning officers at Walsall Council recommended refusal due to concerns over highway safety and the potential loss of trees on the land. This led the council's planning committee to defer a final decision, allowing Lidl time to address the traffic issues.

Planning Hurdles Overcome

After a review of the highway concerns, the authority's planning officers later gave the green light, with formal approval granted in February 2025. The approved plans involve the complete demolition of the old bingo building to make way for the new discount supermarket.

The new branch is scheduled to open in autumn 2026 and will feature several customer-focused amenities. Shoppers can expect an in-store bakery, the popular 'Middle of Lidl' promotional aisle, and customer toilets.

A Boost for Local Employment

A key benefit of the development is the creation of approximately 40 'well paid' jobs for local residents. This investment comes as Lidl GB, part of the Schwarz Group, celebrates the recent opening of its 1,000th store nationwide.

Joe Caunt, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, expressed his enthusiasm: "We’re sure residents will be delighted to hear we’re a step closer to bringing our much-loved products to Darlaston. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our journey so far, we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors which are on track to open in autumn this year."

The start of construction marks a significant step in regenerating a key site in Darlaston, promising enhanced shopping options and a welcome economic boost for the community.
