Fate of 18 Birmingham City players who left in 12 months

Birmingham City have seen a massive turnover of players in the last two years, with 38 signings since Chris Davies took charge in June 2024 and a similar number departing. In the past 12 months, 18 senior players have left the club. Here is an update on each of them.

Grant Hanley

The Scottish defender joined Blues on a short-term deal to help secure promotion from League One. He then moved to Hibernian, playing 26 games last season, and is set to feature for Scotland at the World Cup in North America, adding to his 68 caps.

Lee Myung-jae

Left-back Lee provided cover for Blues before returning to South Korea to sign for Daejeon Hana Citizen. He earned call-ups to the national squad but did not make the World Cup team.

Romelle Donovan

The only player from Blues' summer departures to play Premier League minutes in 2025/26, Donovan made four substitute appearances for Brentford and featured in cup games, including against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Ayumu Yokoyama

Yokoyama struggled to settle at Blues and moved to Genk B in Belgium. He made his senior debut for Genk in April and scored his first goal in the final regular-season match, a 2-0 win over OH Leuven. Now 23, he is a fully-fledged first-team player.

George Hall

Hall played 37 of Port Vale's 46 League One matches, accumulating 2,249 minutes. Despite his efforts, Vale were relegated to League Two. The 21-year-old appears to have overcome his hamstring issues.

Manny Longelo

Longelo's potential was unlocked after transitioning to left-winger at Motherwell. He scored nine goals last season, including a brace against Rangers at Ibrox. Motherwell finished fourth in the Scottish Premiership under manager Jens Berthel Askou.

Alfie May

May was sold to Huddersfield after helping Blues earn promotion. He scored seven goals but could not secure back-to-back promotions as Huddersfield finished ninth in League One.

Krystian Bielik

The former club captain moved to West Bromwich Albion but struggled for game time, playing only 19 matches last season.

Brandon Khela

Academy product Khela played 43 matches for Peterborough United, scoring three goals and providing three assists. Posh finished 18th in League One.

Dion Sanderson

Sanderson left Blues permanently and joined Derby County, where he was a regular in their eighth-place Championship finish, earning praise for his performances.

Willum Willumsson

The Icelandic midfielder had a forgettable season after moving to NEC Nijmegen in January. He started only one game and ended the campaign as an unused substitute for nine consecutive matches.

Alfons Sampsted

Sampsted fared better at Go Ahead Eagles, making 13 starts and captaining the team in a Dutch Cup quarter-final defeat to Telstar, despite being sent off on his debut.

Emil Hansson

Hansson returned to the Netherlands midway through the season, joining Heracles. Despite his efforts, the club finished bottom of the Eredivisie. He signed a six-month contract and could move again.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell

The Northern Irish goalkeeper made his loan to Blackpool permanent in January. He started 42 league games for the 13th-placed Tangerines, exorcising his Blues demons.

Tyler Roberts

Roberts joined Mansfield permanently in January and later signed a longer contract. He scored four goals in 19 matches, though his availability was limited. Manager Nigel Clough aims to improve that next season.

Lyndon Dykes

Dykes sought regular football to secure his World Cup spot with Scotland and found it at Charlton. He contributed six goal involvements in 21 league games and played a key role in Charlton's win over Blues. Now a free agent, he could return to the Championship with Millwall or Charlton.

Keshi Anderson

Anderson was offloaded to Portsmouth in January on an 18-month deal. He struggled with fitness and hopes to make a bigger impact next season.

Alfie Chang

Three years after a devastating knee injury, Chang rebuilt his career with loans at Bristol Rovers and Walsall. He joined Walsall permanently in January but is now a free agent. Speaking on the Keep Right On Podcast, he said: 'From July 1 I'll be a free agent, so at the moment I'm looking after myself, looking after my knee, and making sure I'm fit, ready for when I go to a club.'
