Greggs to Hike Prices on Menu Favourites, Staff Braced for Customer Backlash
Greggs price rise prompts staff advice on complaints

High street bakery giant Greggs is preparing to implement price increases on some of its popular menu items, with staff being briefed on how to manage an expected customer backlash.

Inflation Forces "Small Price Increases"

The chain confirmed that small price changes to some products will take effect from the end of December 2025. In a memo to employees, the company attributed the move to rising costs across its supply chain and broader inflationary pressures.

"We're always committed to offering our customers great quality that delivers the best value for money," the internal communication stated. "But like many retailers we're having to manage the pressure of rising prices. While we'll always look to absorb costs whenever we can, we've had to make some small price increases in our range."

Frontline Staff Anxious Over Customer Reaction

The impending changes have sparked concern among shop floor workers, who anticipate bearing the brunt of customer frustration. Several staff members voiced their worries on online forums like Reddit in the days leading up to the announcement.

"I work for Greggs and it annoys me that the customers don't get a heads up... because yes they are going to take it out on us," one employee wrote. They described the prospect of dealing with complaints as "annoying and uncomfortable," emphasising that frontline workers have no control over pricing decisions.

Another commenter sympathised, noting: "Anyone with an ounce of sense knows it isn't your fault. However, being on the front line you are unfortunately subjected to the gripes." A third simply predicted: "Well customers are not going to be happy and they'll take their frustration out on us."

Official Guidance and Customer Assurance

To support its teams, Greggs has provided staff with a suggested response for customer enquiries. The guidance advises workers to say: "We always try and absorb costs where we can, but we've had to make some small price increases. We're confident that we still offer outstanding value."

A Greggs spokesperson sought to reassure loyal customers, stating: "We continue to offer our customers great value and high-quality products across the entire range." They highlighted that many customer favourites, including breakfast and sandwich meal deals, will not see a price change this time around.

The move reflects the ongoing challenge for food-to-go retailers balancing value with rising operational costs, a dynamic increasingly visible on high streets across the UK.
