HSBC provides update on New Street branch reopening

HSBC has announced that its branch on the ramp leading to Grand Central in Birmingham city centre, which closed in October 2025 after a fire at the adjacent Premier Inn hotel, is expected to reopen in early 2027. The bank stated that it is making 'good progress' on repairing significant interior damage caused by the blaze.

The fire, which occurred in October 2025, forced the evacuation of 200 people and required a response from 60 firefighters. While the hotel reopened shortly after, the HSBC branch remained closed, with signage directing customers to alternative locations.

Damage and refurbishment timeline

In a statement to BirminghamLive, HSBC said: 'Our New Street branch sustained significant interior damage as a result of the fire. While this has extended our refurbishment timeline, we are making good progress and currently expect the branch to reopen in early 2027.'

The bank emphasised its commitment to supporting customers during the closure. 'In the meantime, customers can continue to access banking services and support at our temporary HSBC Local branch in Grand Central, as well as our nearby branches in the Jewellery Quarter and Centenary Square,' the statement added.

Alternative banking services available

While the New Street branch remains closed, customers can access banking support at 1 Centenary Square, which offers self-service machines for cash withdrawals and deposits. A full counter service branch is available on Warstone Lane in the Jewellery Quarter, and a HSBC Local branch is currently operating in Grand Central.

The Grand Central location does not have a counter for cash access, but bank specialists are on hand to assist with queries such as online transactions, direct debits, standing orders, bereavement banking, and Power of Attorney registration. Support is also available for customers experiencing financial difficulties, disputes, or fraud.

Nearby Lloyds branch to reopen

Across the road from the HSBC branch, the Lloyds bank on the corner of New Street and Corporation Street, which is also currently closed, is set to reopen with a new look on Monday, July 6 at 9:30am.
