Supermarket giant Morrisons is set to sprinkle some festive magic by handing out over 27 tonnes of free carrots to customers across the UK this weekend.
A Festive Treat for Rudolph
The special giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, December 20, allowing shoppers to pick up complimentary 'Naturally Wonky' carrots from branches nationwide. The initiative is designed to provide younger customers with a treat to leave out for Santa's reindeer on Christmas Eve.
Chris Smith, the senior root veg trader at Morrisons, explained the thinking behind the promotion. "Christmas is all about spreading joy and cheer, so we’re delighted to offer our younger customers a free wonky carrot to leave out for Rudolph and his friends," he said. "Our Naturally Wonky range supports British farmers, reduces waste and gives customers a great-value option that still tastes fantastic."
Fighting Food Waste with Wonky Veg
The Naturally Wonky range was first launched by Morrisons back in 2015. Its primary goal is to prevent perfectly edible but imperfect-looking fruit and vegetables from going to waste. This effort has been a significant success, saving thousands of tonnes of produce from being discarded.
Today, the range has expanded far beyond carrots to include items like courgettes, parsnips, and potatoes. In the last year alone, nearly 17,500 tonnes of wonky produce have been sold, highlighting a strong customer shift towards sustainable shopping choices.
More Festive Freebies for Families
The carrot giveaway is not the only festive treat Morrisons is offering. The retailer has also confirmed it will continue its popular Kids Eat Free initiative over the Christmas period.
This scheme allows adults shopping at Morrisons to get a free children's meal from the store's cafe when they purchase an adult meal priced at over £5. The offer is available for children and teenagers up to the age of 16 when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The free kids' meal includes:
- A choice of hot or cold dish.
- A drink.
- A side with vegetables or beans.
Menu options for youngsters are extensive, featuring items such as Goodfella’s Mini Margherita Pizza, Birds Eye Chicken Dippers, and a build-your-own breakfast with potato waffles. For a quicker option, children can also choose a Pick ‘n Mix meal deal from the cafe fridge.
Together, these initiatives underscore Morrisons' commitment to providing value and reducing waste during the busy festive season, offering practical help to families while promoting important environmental messages.
