Marks & Spencer Confirms New Store Opening in Abingdon This Spring
Marks & Spencer has officially announced the launch of a brand-new store in the popular market town of Abingdon, set to open its doors this April. The retailer confirmed the news via a statement on Facebook, marking a significant addition to the local retail landscape.
Planning Permission Granted for 18,000 Sq Ft Foodhall
The new store, which will be located at the Fairacres Retail Park, received planning permission from Vale of White Horse District Council at the end of last year. Spanning 18,000 square feet, the foodhall is designed to offer a comprehensive shopping experience, featuring an in-store bakery, dedicated flower and wine shops, and a click-and-collect facility.
Abingdon East county councillor Tom Greenway expressed enthusiasm for the development, stating, "I know lots of us were very keen to see this one get signed off, and it’s great news to see another big name shop moving into Abingdon."
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The opening is expected to create approximately 70 new jobs, providing a boost to the local economy. Developers have emphasized their goal to establish a "best-in-class Foodhall" for shoppers, aiming to enhance the retail offerings in the area.
This expansion comes six years after the closure of a previous M&S store in the town centre, which had been operational since 1908. The new store represents a revival of the brand's presence in Abingdon, addressing community demand for accessible retail options.
Objections and Regeneration Concerns
Despite the approval, the store faced objections from Sunny Gentian, owner of the Bury Street precinct in Abingdon town centre. Concerns were raised that the new foodhall could negatively impact regeneration plans for The Charter area, with allegations that it might draw an estimated £3.5 million in trade away from the town centre.
However, the planning permission was granted regardless, highlighting the council's support for the development as part of broader economic growth initiatives.
Broader Retail Expansion Plans
The Abingdon store is part of Marks & Spencer's wider retail strategy, following recent announcements such as plans for a new megastore in Northwich. This move underscores the chain's commitment to expanding its footprint in key market towns across the UK.
Residents and job seekers are encouraged to register their interest in career opportunities at the new store, as Marks & Spencer seeks to integrate into the community and contribute to local employment.
