Sutton Coldfield Town Centre Undergoes Nine Major Retail Transformations

In recent days and weeks, Sutton Coldfield town centre, Birmingham's largest retail area beyond the city centre, has witnessed a flurry of activity with nine significant changes. These include two new openings, three closures, and four relocations, reflecting a dynamic shift in the local business landscape.

Three Notable Closures Impact the Town Centre

Three businesses have departed Sutton Coldfield in quick succession. Bar 28 on Birmingham Road has permanently closed, as confirmed by the local business improvement district. Additionally, The Cake Solution, a cake shop and café located in a former Patisserie Valerie on the Parade side of the Gracechurch Centre, has shut down. The shop has been cleared out, and its sign removed.

Neil Blakeman, owner of the UK side of this business, which is popular in Australia, declined to comment on the closure or provide details about staff. He stated, “It’s not something I wish to discuss.”

Furthermore, the Trespass camping and outdoor shop on the opposite side of the Parade has also closed for good. After appearing to have multiple closing down sales that did not materialise, the shop is now completely cleared out, with a handwritten note in the window indicating, “CLOSED. Nearest stores – Perry Barr – Birmingham Fort.”

Four Relocations Following Market Village Closure

The closure of Sutton Coldfield's indoor market in South Parade, which went into liquidation in January, has prompted four relocations. Traders were forced to leave on Tuesday, January 27, but three businesses have quickly found new homes across the road in the Gracechurch Centre.

Tailors Royal Stitch has moved inside the centre, while S&B Zone Cut barbers and the 2Ahead ladies hairdressers have joined forces to split the former Prints and Treats premises. Additionally, Crested Schoolwear has relocated from the top end of the centre, near Harvey Norman, to the other side of House of Fraser.

Two New Openings Add to the Town's Offerings

Amid the changes, two new businesses have opened in Sutton Coldfield. Rudy's pizzeria has launched its latest outlet on Birmingham Road, bringing a fresh dining option to the area. Meanwhile, the Australian department store Harvey Norman has announced it will open in a week, adding to the retail diversity.

Further Changes on the Horizon for 2026

More transformations are expected in Sutton Coldfield town centre. Claire’s is continuing its closing down sale, and the metal girders for the new Aldi in Brassington Avenue are starting to take shape. These developments suggest that 2026 will be a year of significant evolution for the town, with ongoing shifts in its commercial environment.
