Southampton are on the verge of signing Aston Villa forward Lewis Dobbin after agreeing a deal worth £9 million, with additional add-ons, according to The Athletic. The 23-year-old is set to undergo a medical before finalising his move to the south coast club.
Impressive Loan Spell at Preston
Dobbin spent last season on loan at Preston North End, where he made a significant impact in the Championship. He scored 10 goals and provided eight assists in 39 league appearances, also finding the net in Preston's Carabao Cup defeat to Wrexham. His performances made him a target for permanent transfer this summer.
Background and Previous Moves
The forward joined Aston Villa from Everton in 2024 for a fee similar to the one Southampton will pay. He came through Everton's youth ranks and was part of a 'PSR trade' that saw him move to Villa while Tim Iroegbunam went in the opposite direction. His first loan spell away from Villa was at West Bromwich Albion, where he failed to score before being recalled in January 2025. He later showed promise on loan at Norwich City but missed the final three months of the season due to injury.
Impact on Southampton
Southampton are looking to strengthen their attacking options as they prepare for the upcoming season. Dobbin's versatility and goal-scoring ability from midfield or the forward line could provide valuable depth. The deal represents a significant investment in a player who has proven his capability in the Championship.
