Turtle Bay Closes Solihull Branch Amid Wave of Shutdowns and CVA Restructuring
Turtle Bay Shuts Solihull Branch Amid CVA Restructuring

Turtle Bay, the popular Caribbean restaurant and bar chain, has permanently closed its Solihull branch, marking the latest in a series of closures affecting the brand. The Solihull location, along with branches in Walthamstow and Middlesbrough, has shut its doors as part of a restructuring effort.

Chain Proposes Company Voluntary Arrangement

The company has confirmed it is proposing a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), a legal process that allows businesses to renegotiate debts while continuing to operate. This move comes as Turtle Bay seeks to stabilize its finances amid challenging economic conditions. The chain currently operates around 50 restaurants across the UK, known for its Caribbean cuisine and cocktails.

Founder Ajith Jayawickrema bought the business back from private equity firm Piper in May last year, which had backed the company since 2013. In a statement, Turtle Bay said: "As a result, we believe we now have a sustainable business at its core. However, like much of the UK hospitality sector, Turtle Bay continues to face significant economic headwinds."

Economic Pressures Cited

The company attributed the closures to rising operating costs, reduced consumer spending, changing footfall patterns, and legacy property commitments. It also highlighted increases in food, energy, business rates, employment, and recycling costs, alongside continued pressure on consumer confidence. These factors have created significant strain across the hospitality sector.

Google confirms the Solihull location's permanent closure, despite thousands of positive reviews. Customers praised the restaurant's atmosphere, service, and food. Eloise Anais said: "Often come here, amazing atmosphere, friendly & helpful staff. The food is gorgeous! Head chef and the server Kieron, was very polite, positive, and good laugh. Can tell he enjoys his job! Will be returning again! :)"

Customer Praise for Bottomless Brunch

Joe Gardner added: "Best bottomless brunch we have ever been too. Thanks so much Rio and Tea. Rio you have made our day, you are fantastic!" Jessica Tucker said: "Brilliant experience at Turtle Bay, would highly recommend!! Our waitress Lou was lovely and welcoming - very helpful. The food was excellent and it was a nice atmosphere for a Sunday evening. The bartender Rio was amazing and makes really good cocktails. Overall would come here again and can’t emphasise the brilliant, welcoming service."

The closure of the Solihull branch reflects broader challenges in the UK hospitality industry, with many chains struggling to maintain profitability. Turtle Bay's CVA proposal aims to secure the future of its remaining restaurants, though further closures cannot be ruled out.
