Wolves target out-of-contract stars for Championship rebuild summer 2026
Wolves target out-of-contract stars for Championship rebuild

Wolves face a busy summer with players set to depart and arrive as part of their Championship re-build. The club will be looking across different areas of the transfer market as they target a return to the Premier League at the first opportunity.

With a handful of games remaining, the transfer window will soon be open with Wolves keen to do early business ahead of a hectic summer. The expected turnover of players plus the World Cup means it is going to be a busy few months at Molineux.

A number of players have already been linked away from the club, while this week the Express & Star revealed Wolves are eyeing a move for Sunderland’s Dan Neil. Neil is out of contract at the Stadium of Light and has already confirmed he won’t be signing another deal.

Wolves will no doubt spend in the window and look to utilise the loan market. The other key area is looking at free agents. Neil would be a shrewd free agent grab, given his Championship credentials. Here is a look at a few other out of contract players who Wolves could have a look at in the summer.

Josh DaSilva

The 27-year-old former Arsenal youngster has been at Brentford for a number of years - helping them to promotion before establishing themselves in the Premier League. In recent times though, DaSilva has found himself out of the Brentford side, playing just a handful of games across three seasons. A serious knee injury in February last year ended his campaign - but he was handed a new deal. However, he is yet to feature this season. He no doubt has injury issues which would play a part in any clubs moving for him, but he has promotion winning experience in the Championship.

Axel Tuanzebe

A man who seems to have had quite a few clubs - but one who has more than one promotion under his belt. The defender, who came through at Manchester United, has featured in the Premier League, EFL and Serie A. His first promotion came via the play-offs for Villa in 2019 - and since then he has played for the likes of Napoli and Stoke. He helped Ipswich reach the top flight before swapping East Anglia for Burnley last summer - penning a one year deal. He has shown he has Premier League capabilities but he has more than proved that he can be one of the best defenders in the Championship. Given he only signed a one year contract at Burnley last summer - he could well be a key name on Wolves’ radar.

Josh Laurent

Staying with Burnley, another who would fit the Championship experience and out of contract category, is Josh Laurent. The ex-Reading and Stoke wide man has played the majority of Burnley’s games in the Premier League this season. As they head down with Wolves, he may be a player who fancies a change. He certainly has Championship ability and know how which is what Rob Edwards’ side are going to need next season.

Harry Winks

Potentially a controversial one, given the PR and news around Winks at the moment. The 10 cap England international is currently being seen as the villain in Leicester City’s shocking relegation to League One. Reportedly on big money having arrived from Spurs for £10m in 2023 - the ex-Tottenham man has played 107 times for the Foxes. He is out of contract this summer and with Leicester down, they will need to offload key players from the wage bill. Winks will be one of them. There have been questions over him after a bust up with Leicester fans recently. So his character has been called out in recent weeks - but there is no doubt the 30-year-old still has Championship ability. In a thriving side he can prove what he can do. And with Wolves likely to be one of the pace setters next season, a player like Winks could have an impact.

Ross Stewart

A striker who has had a pretty decent goal record when it comes to the second tier. The Scottish forward was signed by Southampton from Sunderland for £10m, having scored 40 goals in 80 games across League One and the Championship. At St Marys he has been hampered by injury set backs - but he has still done relatively well despite that. He has netted ten goals in 45 appearances, with seven of them coming this season as he battled back to fitness. He will be hoping to achieve promotion with Southampton and if they do go up a new deal is a possibility. If they don’t, then it may make it easier for a club such as Wolves to possibly make a move.

Another at the Saints who is out of contract is former Villa man James Bree, who has long been a very decent operator in the second tier. He spent the first half of the season on loan at Charlton under his former boss Nathan Jones - but is back at Southampton playing a key role in their promotion fight.
