A popular café in the West Midlands has served its final coffee and cake, with its owners pointing to escalating operational expenses as the primary reason for shutting down.
A Heartfelt Farewell to the 'Treacles Family'
Treacles At Mosaic, located in Rugby, announced its permanent closure on social media on Thursday, January 1, 2026. The café, which first opened its doors in April 2024, had built a strong reputation over 20 months for its welcoming atmosphere and homemade food.
In an emotional online post, proprietors Michelle and Tony Edkin expressed their sadness, stating "all good things must come to an end." They extended a profound "thank you and goodbye" to their loyal customers, whom they referred to as their "Treacles Family."
The Deciding Factor: Unsustainable Business Costs
The couple was explicit about the catalyst for their difficult decision. "The continued rise in costs of running a business were the deciding factor," they explained. While acknowledging they had navigated tough periods before, the current economic climate proved insurmountable for the Mosaic site.
Their statement also revealed a personal desire to "simplify our lives a little & find some peace & take things back to basics for a while." The owners expressed gratitude to the Bilton Evangelical Church, with whom they shared their premises, calling the experience a "blessing."
Focus Shifts to New Dunchurch Bakery Venture
This closure does not signal the end of the Treacles brand. The couple opened a new bakery in Dunchurch in November 2025, which will continue to operate. They indicated that focusing on this newer venture would allow for some "much-needed reflection."
The future of the Mosaic site in Rugby remains uncertain, though the departing owners expressed confidence that whatever comes next will be "truly blessed" given the quality of the team overseeing the space.
