McDonald's Unveils Major Darlington Distribution Hub with 200 New Jobs
McDonald's has announced the opening of a significant new distribution centre in Darlington, creating 200 new jobs in the region. The fast-food giant, in partnership with global supply chain leader Martin Brower, has launched the 138,000 square foot facility as part of its expansion and sustainability efforts.
Boosting Local Economy and Reducing Environmental Impact
The new hub will supply more than 200 McDonald's restaurants across the area, with the company claiming it will reduce drive times to sites and save approximately 2.5 million road miles each year. This reduction is expected to lower carbon emissions significantly, aligning with McDonald's goal of achieving net zero by 2040.
More than 70 suppliers will now deliver over 400 different products to the centre, which will store, sort, and distribute them to restaurants. The facility includes on-site solar generation and electric vehicle infrastructure, enhancing its eco-friendly credentials.
Community and Sustainability Focus
The opening was celebrated with an event attended by Darlington Council members, including Leader Stephen Hark. Laura Henderson, vice president of supply chain at McDonald's UK & Ireland, emphasized the company's commitment to the North East.
"Investing in Darlington means investing in people, in local jobs, and in a more sustainable future," Henderson stated. "By cutting road miles, strengthening our network, and supporting local employment at scale, this centre shows how we can grow responsibly while supporting our customers and the communities we serve."
Innovative Design and Partnership
Parv Sangera, managing director at Martin Brower UK & Ireland, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project. "We're incredibly proud to open the doors to our Darlington facility, a project that reflects our long-standing partnership with McDonald's and our shared focus on resiliency, innovation, and sustainability," Sangera said.
The centre is built to BREEAM Excellent standards and features a unique frozen-chilled-ambient cold chain system. This design represents a forward-thinking approach to logistics, combining operational efficiency with a strong commitment to environmental and community goals.
This development marks a major milestone for McDonald's in the UK, showcasing how large corporations can drive economic growth while advancing sustainability initiatives. The new jobs and reduced emissions are expected to have a positive impact on the local area and beyond.
