Amazon Fire TV Stick Owners Face Critical Warning Over Popular App
Millions of Amazon Fire TV Stick users have been issued an urgent warning following the blocking of a widely used application from the official Amazon Appstore. The Downloader app, which enables streamers to access content not officially available on Amazon's platform by entering URL links, has been suspended across Fire devices this week due to Amazon's stringent restrictions on third-party applications.
Developer Responds and Submits Update
Elias Saba, the developer behind Downloader and the operator of AFTVnews, has confirmed the suspension and taken immediate action. He stated emphatically, "Do NOT install the app named Downloader for Fire, Browser... That app is a SCAM that tricks you into paying $6.99 per week." Saba has submitted a version 2.0.2 update to Amazon, which no longer registers the app as a browser, aligning with its previous functionality.
In a post on AFTV News, Saba expressed optimism, saying, "I'm hopeful that Amazon will approve this version and restore Downloader in the Amazon Appstore. The update was submitted this morning, and it usually takes Amazon a few days to test and approve submissions."
Functionality and Risks of the App
The Downloader app allows users to browse web addresses or input short codes on their Fire TV devices, facilitating the direct download and installation of applications, including those not listed in the Amazon Appstore. This process, known as sideloading, has made Downloader a preferred tool for many Fire TV owners seeking expanded content access.
However, the suspension has led to the emergence of a fraudulent version. Cordbusters has issued a stark warning: "If you search for Downloader in the Amazon Appstore and find an app called 'Downloader for Fire, Browser...', be very careful. This app asks for a subscription of $6.99 per week – an extraordinary amount for what is essentially a file-downloading utility, and completely at odds with the real Downloader app, which has always been free and always will be."
Broader Context of Streaming Crackdowns
This development occurs amidst ongoing efforts by sports broadcasters and copyright authorities to clamp down on illegal streaming activities involving Amazon Fire Stick devices. The blocking of Downloader highlights Amazon's enforcement of its app policies, potentially impacting users who rely on such tools for accessing unofficial content.
As the situation unfolds, Fire TV Stick owners are advised to exercise caution, avoid the scam version, and await further updates regarding the potential restoration of the legitimate Downloader app through Amazon's approval process.
