Devon Air Ambulance Expands Heli Hike with New Route

Devon Air Ambulance is urging the public to register for its life-saving walking challenge, the Heli Hike, with an enticing 20% Early Bird discount available for those who sign up before January 30. Building on the triumph of last year's inaugural event, this year's Heli Hike returns with an expanded offering, introducing a brand-new 6-mile route to complement the existing 14-mile and 26-mile hikes.

Event Details and Scenic Routes

Scheduled for Saturday, July 4, the Heli Hike will commence on the picturesque South Devon coast at Bigbury. Participants from across the nation can select from three distinct routes: the newly added 6-mile walk, a 14-mile hike, or the ultimate 26-mile challenge. Each path promises to showcase some of Devon's most breathtaking stretches of the South West Coast Path.

Stunning Coastal Landscapes

Starting in Bigbury and meandering through South Devon, walkers will encounter spectacular vistas, including panoramic seascapes over Burgh Island, charming views of the Avon Estuary, and scenic outlooks at Malthouse Point. The routes feature steep ascents, narrow trails, stiles, and steps, but participants are rewarded with awe-inspiring panoramic views while supporting a vital local charity.

Route Specifications and Difficulty Levels

The Heli Hike offers varied challenges to suit different fitness levels:

  • 6-Mile Route: Described as short but mighty, this path includes steep climbs, stiles, and uneven terrain. It is suitable for children aged 13 and above, with a total elevation of 1,138 feet.
  • 14-Mile Route: Rated as 'Tough', this hike involves steep climbs and mixed terrain, with a total elevation of 2,561 feet.
  • 26-Mile Route: Also rated 'Tough', this challenging route mirrors the 2025 Jennycliff Route, featuring steep climbs and uneven ground, with a total elevation of 4,833 feet.

Fundraising and Participant Requirements

All participants are required to raise a minimum of £200. Upon reaching this target, they will receive a complimentary T-shirt and water bottle as a token of appreciation. Walkers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult and register using an adult's contact details.

Testimonial from Previous Participants

Last year, a team from local company Red Rock Electrical participated in the event. Matt Simmons, managing director, shared his experience: "Our company had been wanting to do something to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance for a while. We heard the advert for Devon Heli Hike on the radio and thought it was the perfect opportunity. A group of employees and friends took on the 26-mile hike. It was a harder challenge than a lot of us expected, but the achievement outweighed all the aches and pains. The event is well organised, and we thoroughly enjoyed the celebratory glass of bubbles at the finish line!"

Event Preparation and Support

Participants will receive a Digital Event Pack containing essential resources such as maps, elevation graphs, kit lists, and all necessary information to tackle the challenge effectively. This ensures walkers are well-prepared for the demanding yet rewarding experience.

By joining the Heli Hike, individuals not only embark on a memorable adventure through Devon's stunning landscapes but also contribute to raising awareness and crucial funds for Devon Air Ambulance, a charity dedicated to saving lives across the region.
