Children's Physiotherapist Takes on Sunderland Half Marathon for Local Charity

A dedicated children's physiotherapist is preparing to run the Sunderland City Half Marathon to raise vital funds for a charity supporting children with disabilities, additional needs, and terminal illnesses across the North East region.

Sophie Cowen's Mission to Support Local Families

Sophie Cowen, a Specialist Children's Physiotherapist at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, works directly with families supported by The Sunshine Fund. She plays a crucial role in applying for specialist equipment that cannot be accessed through statutory services but significantly improves the daily lives of local children and their communities.

The half marathon event is scheduled for May 17, and donations can be made through Sophie's dedicated fundraising page.

Sophie explained her motivation, stating, "I became aware of The Sunshine Fund and the amazing work they do through working with children with complex and special educational needs within my job as a children's physiotherapist. I have worked alongside the fund on a few occasions now to source specialist equipment for my patients."

She added, "I have seen first-hand the joy this equipment brings to patients and their families. The right equipment facilitates a person's access and participation in the community and involvement in family activities."

This challenge represents a personal milestone for Sophie, who completed her first 10k race last year and was inspired by family and friends who have run half marathons.

Multiple Ways to Support The Sunshine Fund's Mission

For those inspired by Sophie's story, The Sunshine Fund offers numerous opportunities to get involved in their mission to create brighter futures for children with complex needs in the region. Fundraising activities range from bake sales and sponsored cycles to skydives, pub quizzes, walks, hikes, and various running events.

The charity encourages participation in mass events throughout the year and provides support to fundraisers, including branded apparel. Those interested in organizing their own fundraiser or learning more about the charity's work can contact them directly via email.

Upcoming Charity Running Events

The Sunshine Fund organizes several running events that welcome participants of all abilities:

  • Sunshine Run 5k: A flat and fast route along Newcastle Quayside scheduled for a sunny mid-week evening in June. The event features chip timing and a supportive atmosphere, perfect for beginners, seasoned runners, or those seeking motivation. A Couch to 5k program is available for those starting their running journey.
  • The Great North Run: With the world-famous half marathon now six months away, the charity still has limited spaces available. This year, more than 140 runners will represent The Sunshine Fund during the GNR weekend. Participants receive a goodie bag with essential items, including a Team Sunshine t-shirt, and are invited to a post-run celebration in the charity village.

Alternative Fundraising and Volunteering Opportunities

For those not interested in running, The Sunshine Fund offers other engaging activities, including a private ghost tour at Chillingham Castle. Additionally, several volunteering opportunities are available:

  1. Marshaling the Sunshine Run course
  2. Assisting at the black-tie Question of Sport event
  3. Helping out at the Ponteland Duck Race

By participating in any of these events or volunteering, individuals directly contribute to improving the lives of children living with disabilities in the North East. The charity continues to expand its community presence, recently announcing it will take over the Ponteland Duck Race for 2026.
