The clip-clop of hooves echoed through the corridors of Moya Cole Hospice as Gideon, a Shetland pony, made a heartwarming visit to patients, families, volunteers, and staff. The pony, brought by GP Rebecca Marchmont, toured the ward and met nearly every patient, spreading smiles along the way. Gideon was dressed for the occasion with colorful flowers woven into his braided mane and black, glittery hoof boots as he trotted through the halls.
A Thank You Visit Rooted in Gratitude
Rebecca brought Gideon to the hospice free of charge as a personal thank you for the care her uncle, John, received there in 2016. Rebecca, a GP, had been placed at the Heald Green hospice for six months during her doctor training. She explained, "When I got Gideon, I just knew I wanted to bring him here to say thank you for the care my uncle received. I still use everything I learned during my six months in Heald Green in my practice. I learned so much about palliative care and end-of-life care."
Her uncle had neck cancer and initially wished to be cared for at home, but his symptoms became uncontrollable. He was admitted to the hospice at the end of December 2015. Rebecca reflected, "It saved us as a family. We went from being his carers to being his family again."
Spreading Joy Across the Region
Rebecca has brought Gideon to numerous care homes and hospices across the region. She treasures witnessing the happiness the pony brings. "You get to witness that joy. It's also great for the staff and you get to bring some smiles to them during their busy day. They love it as well. It's also something extra for the patients; it's not a prescription. It's just bringing them some quality time. It's lovely to be able to provide them with photos and memories," she said.
Gideon enjoyed his day touring the hospice and returned home to well-deserved treats. His visit offered a unique and uplifting experience for everyone involved.
