Essex TLC Teddy Charity Celebrates 25 Years of Comforting Children
An Essex-based charity that has brought solace to hundreds of thousands of frightened children is celebrating a significant milestone this week as it marks its 25th anniversary. The beloved TLC Teddy scheme is embarking on an exciting new chapter by expanding into paediatric wards for the very first time, aiming to reach even more young patients across the county.
Expanding Reach to Support Young Patients
This important anniversary will see the introduction of comforting teddies into nine paediatric wards across seven NHS hospitals throughout Essex. The expansion is specifically designed to support children undergoing planned medical treatments, providing them with a source of comfort during challenging times.
The initiative was originally founded on 12 March 2001 by Essex Freemason Neil Beverley, with the first donations directed to local Accident & Emergency departments. The original mission was both simple and powerful: to calm fear, ease distress, and bring comfort during moments of uncertainty for vulnerable children.
A Quarter Century of Making a Difference
Reflecting on this remarkable milestone, founder Neil Beverley shared his pride in the charity's journey. "What began as a simple idea has now brought smiles to over four million children at a time when it mattered most," he said. "Today is a very proud day, marking the 25th anniversary of the launch of the TLC Teddy Appeal."
In Essex alone, the charity has distributed more than 500,000 teddies to children in hospital settings as meaningful gestures of care and compassion. The impact extends far beyond county borders, with estimates suggesting that one child receives a TLC Teddy somewhere in the world every two and a half minutes.
Global Recognition and Local Impact
TLC chairman Paul Reeves emphasized the charity's widespread influence. "Since we started TLC, we have helped over four million children during times of great stress in their lives," he noted. "This is something my fellow Freemasons and I, most of whom are parents and grandparents, are justifiably proud of."
The successful scheme has now been adopted across the United Kingdom and internationally in locations including New Zealand, Spain, and Hong Kong. Each teddy comes in six bright, cheerful colors and is utilized by doctors and nurses to distract and reassure their young patients during medical procedures.
Addressing a Critical Need in Healthcare
Healthcare professionals have highlighted that children admitted for planned procedures often arrive without personal comfort items, making this expansion particularly timely and valuable. The bears frequently become lasting companions for children, serving as tangible reminders of kindness during difficult healthcare experiences.
Jerusha Murdoch-Kelly, Deputy Director of Nursing at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, expressed gratitude for the charity's ongoing support. "We would like to thank TLC for their support over the last 25 years," she said. "TLC bears bring comfort to children arriving in A&E feeling worried or upset, and they're wonderful distractions during difficult moments. We're so grateful these donations are now reaching our children's ward too. Having an extra something to cuddle at night makes a big difference."
Celebrating Through Community Engagement
The gap in pediatric comfort care is being addressed thanks to years of dedicated fundraising and the continued generosity of Freemasons across Essex. To celebrate the anniversary, TLC Essex is delivering bears to hospitals in Basildon, Chelmsford, Colchester, Harlow, Romford, Southend, and Leytonstone.
Special presentations are taking place across the county, with Provincial Grand Master Paul Tarrant visiting Colchester Hospital to meet with healthcare teams and celebrate this milestone achievement.
A Legacy of Compassion
This latest expansion ensures that more children will receive cuddly reminders that they are not alone during hospital stays. From a single idea born in Essex to a worldwide movement bringing comfort to millions, these bears continue to demonstrate that small gestures can indeed make an enormous difference in the lives of vulnerable children.
The TLC Teddy charity's 25-year journey stands as a testament to community compassion, showing how simple acts of kindness can transform frightening medical experiences into moments of comfort and reassurance for children facing health challenges.
