An investigation is underway after a West Midlands Ambulance Service employee was racially abused in Birmingham. The incident occurred on Edmund Road, Saltley, on August 8, and was captured on video that has since circulated on social media.
Footage shows an irate man hitting the side of a patient transport van and subjecting the white driver to a barrage of racist and other vile abuse. The man then took out his phone and pulled his T-shirt over his nose in an attempt to disguise his identity. Worried passengers can be heard saying 'police' and 'can you drive off' before the clip ends.
Police Investigation Launched
West Midlands Police confirmed they were called to the scene on August 8 following reports of a racially aggravated assault. A spokesperson said: "We are investigating reports of a racially aggravated incident in Birmingham. We were called about an incident on Edmund Road, Saltley, on August 8, following reports of a racially aggravated assault."
The force acknowledged the video being shared online, adding: "We are aware of a video being shared online, and we understand the concern in the community. An investigation has been launched, and officers will be carrying out enquiries to identify the person involved."
Ambulance Service Responds
West Midlands Ambulance Service said the incident involved a patient transport services vehicle. A spokesperson stated: "The Trust is aware of the case and is assisting West Midlands Police as part of their enquiries. We are also providing support to the members of staff who were involved. At this time it would be inappropriate to say anything further."
The ambulance service is cooperating fully with the police investigation and is offering support to the affected staff members.
