A teenager from Birmingham has been arrested after a man was discovered with serious injuries on a street in Portsmouth. The 19-year-old victim was found on London Road at approximately 8:05pm on Thursday 30 July, with Hampshire Police describing injuries to his head and hand as serious but not life-threatening.
Emergency services attended the scene and the injured man was taken to hospital for treatment. Police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which prompted a visible response in the Portsea area.
Six People Arrested Across Three Cities
As part of the investigation, six individuals were arrested. Among them was an 18-year-old man from Birmingham, detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue. A 20-year-old man from Croydon was also arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and has been granted conditional bail.
A 24-year-old man from Birmingham faced suspicion of wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. Although he was released without further action regarding the wounding charge, he received a conditional caution for the possession of an offensive weapon — an outcome that allows police to deal with the offence without going to court.
Three More Released Without Charge
Three further arrests were made: a 23-year-old man from Birmingham, a 17-year-old boy from Birmingham, and a 17-year-old boy from Wolverhampton. The 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon; the two teenagers were held on suspicion of wounding with intent, with the Wolverhampton boy also facing an additional assault charge and weapon possession. All three have been released with no further action.
“No further action” means the individuals will not face prosecution in relation to these specific allegations, although police retain the ability to revisit the case if new evidence emerges. The conditional bail imposed on the two remaining suspects typically requires them to report to a police station on a regular basis, surrender their passport, or abide by other restrictions set by the investigating team.

The spokesperson confirmed that six people were arrested as part of the enquiry, with the majority later released. The Croydon man and the 18-year-old from Birmingham remain on conditional bail as police continue their work.
