Footage from Perry Barr shows a Land Rover Discovery driver being urged to "stop the car" before entering deep flood water on Church Road, one of the areas worst hit by the overnight storm. Despite the warning, the vehicle appeared to drive through the water regardless.
The incident unfolded as parts of Birmingham were battered by severe weather, with roads and vehicles submerged in water. Areas around Alexander Stadium, Perry Park and The Church Tavern pub were especially badly affected, according to local reports.
Residents and council workers step in
Elsewhere on Church Road, two residents and a council worker worked together to unblock drains, while other residents clearing flooded roads shouted at neighbours to close their front doors. The aim was to prevent a bow wave from pushing water into their properties.
A silver car was abandoned in the area, and the owner reportedly had to escape through the vehicle's sunroof as water levels rose. Residents were also seen wading through water to reach their homes, while firefighters wearing life vests waited to use a pump to remove water from affected properties.
Several roads badly affected
Thornbridge Avenue, Haddon Road and Curbar Road were also badly affected, with several homes and vehicles flooded. The scale of the disruption prompted an official response from emergency services.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said last night: "We currently have six crews dealing with a significant flooding affecting Curbar Road, Thornbridge Avenue and Haddon Road, Birmingham. Crews are being supported by West Midlands Police and Birmingham City Council. Please avoid the area, where possible."
Emergency services urge caution
The fire service's warning came as crews continued to work at the scene, supported by police and council teams. Residents in the affected streets were advised to stay away from the area to allow emergency operations to proceed safely.
The flooding in Perry Barr was part of a wider weather event that caused disruption across Birmingham, including reports of a diverted flight and customers trapped in a pub. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed as water recedes.
