Pedestrian dies after A19 collision in Sunderland

A man in his 60s has tragically died after being hit by two cars on the A19 in Sunderland, police have confirmed.

Details of the Tragic Collision

The incident occurred at approximately 10.10pm on Saturday, December 20. The pedestrian was walking on the southbound carriageway of the A19, below the overpass for the A1893, when he was struck by two vehicles.

Police identified the vehicles involved as a white Toyota Prius and a blue Volkswagen Sharan. The reason the man was walking on the busy A-road remains unknown at this time.

Emergency Response and Road Closures

The North East Ambulance Service deployed significant resources to the scene, including two emergency ambulance crews, a doctor, and a clinical team leader. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead a short time later.

Major road closures were put in place to allow for a thorough police investigation. As of Sunday, December 21, the following closures remain:

  • The A19 northbound between the A690 and A183 junctions.
  • The southbound carriageway between the A1231 and A690 junctions.
  • Pedestrian access along the westbound stretch of the roundabout.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, as the closures are expected to remain for some time.
