Police appeal after Birmingham crash injures two men

West Midlands Police have launched an appeal for witnesses and footage after a two-car crash in Birmingham left two young men with potentially serious injuries. The collision occurred on Old Oscott Lane, on the border of Kingstanding and Great Barr, shortly before 6pm on Thursday, October 15.

A car crossing Old Oscott Lane was struck by a second vehicle, which ended up on its side and lodged in a tree. The driver, aged 19, and passenger, aged 21, of the car that hit the tree were taken to hospital. A woman in the second car sustained minor injuries.

Emergency response and hospital treatment

West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances, three paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic, and the West Midlands CARE team to the scene. A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “On arrival, a man was found in a serious condition. He received specialist trauma care before being conveyed under emergency driving conditions to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.”

“A second man was also found. He was treated for serious injuries before being conveyed under emergency driving conditions to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. A woman, from the second car, was treated for minor injuries and discharged at the scene,” she added.

Witness account from pub landlady

Kim Smith, landlady of The Kingfisher pub, which is next to the crash site, was first on the scene. She said: “I was first on the scene to give assistance to both driver and the passenger (of the car that hit the tree). The passenger was fitting. The driver was able to speak. The fire service cut them out. They both came out through the boot.”

The fire service had to cut the two men out of the vehicle, and both were removed through the boot. The incident took place at the junction of Old Oscott Lane and Old School Lane, with the two cars remaining at the scene for some time after the crash.

Police appeal for footage and information

West Midlands Police is now appealing for anyone with information, particularly dashcam or doorbell footage from the area, to come forward. A spokeswoman for the force said: “We're appealing for footage and information after two men were hurt in a crash in Kingstanding. We were called to Oscott School Lane at the junction of Old Oscott Lane, shortly before 6pm yesterday (October 15) after a car hit a tree.”

“Two men, aged 19 and 21, who were in the car, were taken to hospital with potentially serious injuries. A woman from a second car was treated for less serious injuries by ambulance colleagues at the scene. We’re carrying out a full investigation, speaking to witnesses, and reviewing footage from around the area,” she continued.

“Officers are also appealing directly to anyone with information or footage to share it with us. We are specifically asking for anyone with dashcam or doorbell footage from the area to get in touch. To report information, call 101 or use Live Chat on our website quoting log 4330 of 15 October.”
