Extensive Police Operation Launched for Missing Brazilian Psychologist

Essex Police have initiated a large-scale search for Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto, a 30-year-old Brazilian psychologist who has been missing for over a week. The academic was last seen after meeting a friend at Essex University in Colchester on Tuesday, March 3, and has not contacted loved ones since.

Details of the Disappearance and Investigation

Ms. Barreto traveled by bus from Wivenhoe to the coastal town of Brightlingsea, Essex, on the afternoon of March 3. CCTV footage from a boatyard in Brightlingsea shows a person, believed to be Ms. Barreto, jumping over a fence just after midnight on March 4. This is the last confirmed sighting of her.

Police are investigating the possibility that she took a boat from the boatyard, as a vessel was reported missing from its mooring in Brightlingsea in the early hours of March 4. The boat was later found adrift near Bradwell-on-Sea and has been returned to Brightlingsea for examination.

Key Evidence and Search Efforts

On Monday, March 9, police discovered Ms. Barreto's bag near where the boat was unmoored, intensifying this line of inquiry. Detective Superintendent Anna Granger stated that officers have searched a "hugely significant area of land and coastline," including the River Blackwater, Dengie peninsula, River Crouch, and 2.5km of Mersea Island's southern coast.

Search operations have involved air support services, the marine unit, and specialist search officers. Police are urging anyone with CCTV of the harbour area or boat owners in Brightlingsea to check for any unusual activity and come forward with information.

Ongoing Inquiries and Public Appeal

Between 12:16 a.m. and 12:36 a.m. on March 4, when the boat was unmoored, Ms. Barreto is not visible on CCTV, and there is no clear footage of the person who unmoored the boat. However, police are exploring the possibility that it was her. The boat's route from Brightlingsea to Bradwell has guided search efforts.

Authorities continue to focus on specific search areas and appeal to the public for assistance in locating Ms. Barreto, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as the investigation progresses.
