Predator jailed for 5 years for child sexual abuse

A 77-year-old man from the West Midlands has been sentenced to five years in prison for a series of sexual offences, including the abuse of a girl which began when she was just 12 years old.

A Pattern of Abuse and Bravery

James Fletcher, of Canterbury Close, Rowley Regis, was investigated by West Midlands Police after allegations of rape and sexual assault were made against him in June 2021. The allegations, which dated back a number of years, involved both a woman and a young girl.

Detectives from the force's Public Protection Unit established a pattern of sexual abuse against the two females. Fletcher was subsequently arrested and charged with a number of sexual offences.

The case proceeded to Wolverhampton Crown Court, where part way through the trial, Fletcher changed his plea. He admitted to rape, attempted rape, and two counts of sexual assault, one of which was against a child under the age of 13.

The Lasting Impact on Victims

In a powerful statement read to the court, the girl, now a young woman, described the profound and ongoing impact of Fletcher's crimes. She revealed she felt scared and manipulated into silence at the time.

"Abuse from you has left lasting effects on my life and mental health, and I continue to struggle with the consequences of what happened to me," she said. "The trauma still affects me every day."

A woman also targeted by Fletcher spoke of her relief following the sentencing. She stated that she and her family could now sleep safe knowing that Fletcher was behind bars and not able to cause pain or misery again.

Justice Served and a Message of Support

On November 12, 2025, James Fletcher was jailed for five years. He will also spend an additional three years on licence upon his release.

Investigating officer, DC Adrian Jackson from West Midlands Police, commended the incredible courage shown by the victims in speaking out. He said: "This investigation and subsequent legal proceedings were lengthy, and I commend those who spoke out about Fletcher - for doing so in the first place, and then for having the patience and bravery to deal with the process that followed."

He added that because of their bravery, a sexual predator is now rightly behind bars. DC Jackson also emphasised that support is available for anyone who has experienced something similar, urging them to come forward. The force has vowed to always thoroughly investigate such allegations and seek to convict those responsible.
